Integrated Resource and Waste Management in the Food and Drink Sector 10/04/2006
The ambiguous definition of “waste” under current EU waste legislation can hinder the efficient use of natural resources in the food & drink sector, if marketable by-products are wrongly classified as “waste” although they are appreciated by other economic sectors as valuable or even essential products for various well-established applications. To meet this challenge, a broad stakeholder forum including CIAA and other key actors from inside and outside the food chain, as well as the European Commission, was launched to establish a decision tool for public authorities and industry to clearly distinguish between product and waste.
